A True Nullarbor Outback Stop

Situated on the Eyre Highway in the vast Western Australian Nullarbor, Cocklebiddy is a remote roadhouse community where travellers can refuel, grab a meal, enjoy a drink and find a comfortable place to rest before tackling the next stretch of this incredible journey.

For motorcycle riders, reaching Cocklebiddy is a reminder of just how big Australia really is. The landscape is vast, the roads stretch towards the horizon and the sense of isolation is something you'll remember long after you've left.

A Place With a Story

Cocklebiddy has a fascinating history stretching back well before the modern Eyre Highway.

The area was once home to an Aboriginal mission, with the stone foundations still remaining as a reminder of the settlement's earlier history.

During World War II, the area also attracted the attention of Australian Army engineers searching for reliable water supplies. Their investigations discovered that the underground lakes contained a thin layer of fresh water over a much larger body of saline water — an important reminder of the challenges faced by anyone travelling through this remote part of Australia.

The Wedgetail Inn has also been part of the Nullarbor journey for decades. Historical records show that the hotel licence for the Wedgetail Inn at Cocklebiddy was being transferred as far back as 1990, reflecting its long-standing role as a stopping point on the Eyre Highway.

The biggest attraction is the journey itself.

Cocklebiddy sits on the Eyre Highway between Caiguna and Madura, making the Wedgetail Inn a natural stopping point for anyone riding across the Nullarbor.

🕳️ Discover Cocklebiddy Cave

The area is famous for Cocklebiddy Cave, one of Australia's extraordinary cave systems.

The cave contains a vast underwater passage system and has attracted experienced cave divers from around the world. Exploration of the cave has produced an incredible history of expeditions and record-breaking dives.

In 1983, a French expedition explored approximately 6.4 kilometres of the cave, creating a world record for cave diving at the time. Australian divers subsequently pushed the exploration even further.

Important: Cocklebiddy Cave is not a casual tourist attraction — access is restricted and the cave is primarily of interest to experienced, organised cave-diving groups.

🐦 Eyre Bird Observatory

Around 50 kilometres from Cocklebiddy is the remarkable Eyre Bird Observatory, located at the site of the former Eyre Telegraph Station.

The telegraph station operated from 1897 to 1929 before becoming the Eyre Bird Observatory in 1978. Today it provides visitors with an opportunity to experience the coastal side of the Nullarbor, learn about the area's natural history and see some of the incredible birdlife of the region.

Access involves unsealed and sandy sections, so riders should check current conditions and access requirements before heading there.

Cocklebiddy is one of the most remote communities along the Eyre Highway — and beneath the seemingly endless Nullarbor landscape is an enormous underground cave system.

Cocklebiddy Cave extends for kilometres beneath the plain, with much of the system underwater.

It's a pretty remarkable thought when you're sitting at the Wedgetail Inn looking out across what appears to be nothing but endless Australian bush.
