An Outback Stop on the Legendary Nullarbor
There are few riding experiences in Australia quite like crossing the Nullarbor, and Caiguna Roadhouse is one of those places that becomes part of the story.
Situated on the Eyre Highway in Western Australia, approximately 372 kilometres east of Norseman, Caiguna is a vital stopping point for travellers making the long journey across the Nullarbor. The Roadhouse provides fuel, meals, accommodation, camping, refreshments and all the essentials needed to recharge before continuing the journey.
For riders, it is the sort of place where the kilometres behind you suddenly become part of the adventure β and the kilometres ahead become something to look forward to.
The Famous 90 Mile Straight
Caiguna is particularly famous for marking one end of Australia's legendary 90 Mile Straight.
Stretching approximately 146.6 kilometres between Caiguna and Balladonia, this extraordinary section of the Eyre Highway is one of the longest straight stretches of road in Australia and one of the longest in the world.
For motorcycle riders, it is an experience in itself. The road seems to disappear into the horizon as the enormous Nullarbor landscape stretches out in every direction.
Don't forget to stop for the obligatory photo at the 90 Mile Straight sign before or after tackling this iconic piece of Australian road. πΈποΈ
A Place Built for the Nullarbor Journey
Caiguna was established in the early 1960s to support the increasing traffic travelling across the Nullarbor, including traffic associated with the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth.
Today, the Roadhouse remains an important part of the Eyre Highway journey, providing a welcome place to stop, refuel, grab a meal and rest.
The Caiguna Roadhouse offers motel accommodation, caravan and camping facilities, meals, fuel and a tavern, making it a genuine outback oasis for travellers crossing one of Australia's most remote highways.
Things to See & Do
π¬οΈ Caiguna Blowhole
Only a few kilometres west of the Roadhouse is the fascinating Caiguna Blowhole. Connected to underground limestone caves, the blowhole can actually breathe air in and out as atmospheric pressure changes.
It's an unusual natural feature and well worth the short detour.
π£οΈ 90 Mile Straight
Take the photo, twist the throttle and experience one of Australia's most famous stretches of highway.
Just remember β straight doesn't necessarily mean easy. The Nullarbor can bring heat, wind, wildlife and changing road conditions, so take your time and enjoy the ride.
ποΈ Baxter Memorial & Nullarbor History
The Caiguna area is also connected with the remarkable 1841 crossing of the Nullarbor by explorer Edward John Eyre and his party.
The tragic story of Eyre's expedition and the death of his companion John Baxter is part of the history of this remote landscape. The Baxter Memorial lies south of Caiguna, commemorating the expedition and the extraordinary hardships faced by those early travellers.
ποΈ Explore the Nullarbor
For riders, the biggest attraction may simply be the landscape itself.
The vast open country, spectacular skies, incredible distances and complete sense of remoteness make the Nullarbor one of Australia's great motorcycle touring destinations.
