A Town with a Long History

Pyalong's European history stretches back to the 1830s, when the area became part of the large Pyalong pastoral run established by the Mollison family. The original run covered an enormous area, with sheep and cattle grazing across the district. The township itself was surveyed in 1854, and the first town lots were sold that same year.

Pyalong grew as travellers passed through the district on their way to the McIvor goldfields during Victoria's gold rush. Hotels and other businesses developed to service the travellers, miners and settlers making their way through the region.

The arrival of the railway added another chapter to Pyalong's story. The town was connected to the railway network in 1890, becoming part of the line that eventually connected Heathcote Junction with Heathcote and Bendigo. Although the railway closed in 1968, the historic railway trestle bridge over Mollison Creek remains a reminder of this period.

Pyalong makes an excellent base for exploring the surrounding countryside by motorcycle. Take the scenic roads through Tooborac, Glenaroua and the surrounding farming districts, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the winding country roads and rolling landscapes.

History buffs can explore the town's historic buildings and the Pyalong cemetery, which dates from 1859 and contains the graves of many families connected to the district's early history.

The old railway trestle bridge over Mollison Creek is another interesting piece of local heritage, while the surrounding region offers walking, golf and plenty of quiet country scenery.

For riders travelling between Melbourne, the central Victorian goldfields and the High Country, Pyalong is a great place to slow down, leave the main road behind and discover some of the smaller communities that make regional Victoria special.

Community & Events

Pyalong has a strong community spirit, with sporting clubs, community groups and local events playing an important role in village life. The local recreation reserve includes facilities for tennis and netball, while the Pyalong Golf Club provides another opportunity to enjoy the surrounding countryside.

The town also has a proud volunteer tradition. The Pyalong CFA has served the community since 1937, and a new fire station was opened in 2025, reflecting the continuing importance of community volunteers in the district.

Pyalong was once its own shire, and remained the centre of the Shire of Pyalong until local government amalgamations in 1994. For much of the post-war period, it was Victoria's smallest local government area by population.
