Standing proudly on Railway Terrace in the heart of Pinnaroo, the Golden Grain Hotel is a genuine Mallee country pub with more than a century of history. Established in 1906, the hotel has been part of Pinnaroo's story from the very beginning of the town's development and remains a welcoming stop for locals, travellers and riders exploring the South Australian–Victorian border country.

A Piece of Mallee History

The hotel's story began in 1906 as the Land of Promise Hotel, at a time when the railway had just reached Pinnaroo and the surrounding agricultural district was beginning to boom. The railway was hugely important to the early Mallee, providing a vital link for transporting wheat, livestock and other produce while bringing people and supplies into the developing town.

The original hotel was later rebuilt, with the new building opening as the Commercial Hotel in 1914. In 1958, the hotel was renamed the Golden Grain Hotel, a name that reflects the importance of grain growing to the Mallee region.

The distinctive building features curved stone gables, arched doorways and decorative architectural details that provide a wonderful glimpse into Pinnaroo's early years.

Start at the Mallee Tourist & Heritage Centre, where you can learn more about the district's agricultural, railway and pioneering history. For riders, Pinnaroo also makes an excellent base for exploring the quieter roads of the South Australian and Victorian Mallee, with the Victorian border only a short ride away.

When Pinnaroo's Agricultural Society was formed in 1910, the meeting was held at the Land of Promise Hotel—the building that would eventually become today's Golden Grain Hotel. The town's annual agricultural show became so popular that special trains were once run from Ouyen in Victoria to bring visitors to Pinnaroo.

More than a century later, the Golden Grain Hotel continues the tradition of being a meeting place at the heart of Pinnaroo.
