Standing proudly in the heart of one of Victoria's historic goldfields towns, the Rushworth Hotel – affectionately known as the Bottom Pub – has been welcoming locals and travellers since 1863. A Town Built on Gold

Rushworth's story began during the Victorian gold rush. Gold was discovered near the future town site in 1853, and the settlement quickly grew into a busy centre for miners, traders and travellers. By 1858, Rushworth already had hotels, breweries, banks, shops and a courthouse.

Today, much of that history can still be seen along the town's magnificent wide High Street, which was declared a National Trust Urban Conservation Area of Special Significance in 1982. Take a stroll and look for the Walk Through Time plaques, which share stories from Rushworth's gold-rush past.

Things to See & Do

There's plenty to explore once you've collected your passport stamp. Visit the Rushworth Museum, housed in the former Mechanics Institute and home to thousands of items connected to the district's history.

For a step back into the gold rush, head south to Whroo Historic Reserve, once a thriving mining township. Explore the remains of the old settlement, visit the historic cemetery and see the impressive Balaclava open-cut mine from the designated viewing areas.

Nature lovers can explore the surrounding Rushworth State Forest, known for its ironbark country, native wildlife and spring wildflowers. For another great view of the district, the Growlers Hill Fire Observation Tower overlooks Rushworth, Waranga Basin and the surrounding countryside.

Just outside town, Waranga Basin is a popular spot for fishing and water-based recreation.

Annual Events

One of the best times to visit is during the Rushworth Easter Heritage Festival, held each year on Easter Saturday. The historic High Street comes alive with market stalls, live music, vintage machinery, classic vehicles, family entertainment and a grand street parade celebrating the town's rich heritage.
